DOUBLE RAINBOWS OUTSIDE MY WINDOW

Double rainbow

Working at my computer table a couple of days ago I took a moment to gaze out my window with my thoughts. Appearing outside my window were a pair of magnificent rainbows streaming in the sky over the Willamette River in Portland.  Rainbows enthrall me everytime I encounter them, especially if they are double rainbows.

I thought to myself that there is such beauty all around us if we just slow down and use our dreams and thoughts to realize this. Of course this is difficult to do sometimes when all we hear from the politicians and media is bad news. I am not advocating to play pollyanna and tell yourself that all is right with the world. It's not.

My window thoughts brought me to the conclusion that as one person I cannot solve everything that is wrong. I cannot carry the worries of the world on my shoulders. I can only solve, hopefully, what is before me personally.

And if I can reach out and help someone through a doable act -- I will do it. Such as helping a young boy tie his shoe, giving a young woman a jump for her stalled car in a parking lot, dropping money in a street musicians guitar case, helping a friend in a time of tribulation -- all are -- examples of personal reality and not the drama politicians and media expect us to buy into.

Perhaps you believe as I do?

  1. Yes, the world's a pretty nice place and what a shame it would be if none of us took the time to appreciate it. So I leave the politicians to worry about whatever it is they're paid to worry about, which leaves me free to take care of the little bit of world that I can do something about.

    1. John -- I have decided that I don't need politicians in my life anymore. They can play their own game with their politician friends. You certainly know how to find the lovely places around your area -- I enjoy your posts so much --thanks -- barbara

    1. One Fly -- Nice to hear from you. I envy all the travelling you do especially to spots that are not crowded with tourists. Yeah, you and others are thinking the same about the silliness of politicians that live in their own world. thanks -- barbara

    2. I'm not that adventurous. I am going to a place south of Puerto Vallarta on the 18th. It's very easy to get done so I'm kinda in a comfort zone with that. In the hills a bit over a half mile away from the main road and ocean. I am hoping I like this area and place. It seems I can avoid masses of tourists easily. We'll see. I may be back in a week. If what I think happens on the 4th I very well may be in no hurry to get back. I care but not really anymore. I do but I don't. If one cares too much it then becomes depressing because the wrong side seems to win more. It's the simple things that make things go round for me.

    3. One Fly -- I do wish you a simple, relaxed time in your adventure to the area around Puerto Vallarta. I imagine you will be taking your pull-behind camper that you mention in your other posts. Take lots of photos to share on your blog. -- barbara

  3. I do, but I also realize we have to speak out and stand by our convictions when we hear or read something that is a blatant lie or misuse of power.

    1. Tabor -- I agree we need to speak out -- I guess what I was saying is that there is more to life than listening to the politicians talking fear. Is fearmongering the right word? -- barbara

  4. You have a lovely view, deserving of rainbows. I cannot bear to listen to the politicians; I have life to be getting on with.
And, my parents had two of those goose neck desk lamps, same base.

    1. Joanne -- we come from the same era. My father had one on his desk the whole time I lived at home which was about 19 years. I always loved that you could twist it any way you needed light. I have three of them now that I bought over the years. I think I have enough to last me forever. Eventually I will give them to my kids with a story about my dad and his lamp. Unfortunately, I have no idea what happened to his lamp? thanks -- barbara

  5. I agree! Totally! I realize that the world is not perfect, but I get so frustrated with politicians...both parties. I can't stand the media and their motives. Too bad "good" isn't a driving force. Love your rainbows.

    1. turquoisemoon -- I look at the political world as a child playground -- full of bullies and full of untruths. Could all this all be since the corporate powers began influencing politicians as well as the media. thanks -- barbara

  10. I hear you. It's the media that are the main culprits, though, I think. They encourage sensationalism and don't give ordinary people credit for being able to figure out what is worthwhile in life. The ads are awful.

    1. Hattie -- What if all the folks in the US had a moratorium on listening or watching the news for -- say three days. What would be the impact on the media? Would their rating over those three days tell them who is charge? thanks -- barbara

    2. I was interested to note that in the Honolulu Airlines Lounge in Honolulu, CNN was on, but no one was watching it. Instead they were looking at their various devices: I-phones, Kindles, I-Pads.
Oh, and on the plane from Honolulu to Hilo I saw a complete rainbow, a circle, and took a photo of it, but I doubt if it will come out.

  11. Dear Barbara, I very much believe as you do...very much...I saw rainbows just days before you did, I think...Enjoyment of rainbows can sound "corny", so they say...I love the dignity in your rainbow essay here...I am continually reminding myself to remember to slow down & look & see & feel the beauty of the present moment...

    1. Rita -- nice to hear you believe. For many of us nature in all its states can be very grounding. It is amazing to me that we have this wonderful environment and so many people are unaware of what it could contribute to their well being. thanks -- barbara
