CABBAGE PATCH

Small cabbage head ready to pick

I am not raising a garden this year. I've been gardening since I was very young and the actual act of planting and observing plant growth is probably my most enjoyable part of gardening.

Early morning light dancing on the large cabbage leaves

Now that the gardening season is in full swing here in Kentucky, I realize that I miss gardening. To offset that yearning I visited the Berea Community Garden in Berea, Kentucky. Several gardeners were there working their plots which they pay twenty-five dollars for -- giving them a full gardening season. The plots are exceptionally large and most are well maintained by a great cast of gardeners.

When I came upon this beautiful cabbage patch I just had to take some photos of its full splendor. I found the heads and large leaves all very artistic. Nature gives us such a lovely palette of colors, shades, lights, shapes, and lines.

  1. Beautiful cabbage. $25 sounds like a good deal for your own little plot of land for the season.

    1. Rubye -- I don't know if they have any plots left but it would be worth checking into. I find gardening can be such a great meditative experience -- wiping your slate fairly clean of problems if you have any. Do you have community gardens in your area? thanks for the comment -- barbara

  2. Beautiful -- the light on the leaves, the veins of the leaves! All implying that slightly sweet crunch of fresh raw cabbage.

    1. June -- you sound like you like your cabbage how I like it -- raw. It really is a healthy vegetable for us. Well all veggies are healthy but some more than others.

Since I got my new camera I keep sneaking away from my work. I am very undisciplined sometimes.

I would say have a good weekend but when you are retired all days are weekends. -- barbara

  4. I know what you mean about gardening. Nothing puts me right with the world like going out and working in my yard.
    Glad you are posting again.

    1. Hattie -- Everyone should garden -- or at least the politicians should! Posts will be hit and miss throughout the summer. Will slowly work back to regular posting. thanks for the comment -- barbara

  5. I grew up on military bases and my mom (a KY native) would always pay for a garden plot each season.

    1. Michelle -- Nice to hear from you. Your mom sounds like an early partaker of the Community Garden idea. One sure can have nice fresh veggies all summer by participating. thanks -- barbara
