BALANCE IN THE NEW YEAR

In Balance

A few quotes for 2015. Saw the above rock balanced on top of larger rocks at a local park here in Portland. It gave me food for thought about seeking balance in my life for 2015. Looked up some quotes that relate to balance. I am sharing them below -- hope some of them resonant with you -----

Don't confuse symmetry with balance.
~ ~ Tom Robbins

My point is, life is about balance. The good and the bad. The highs and the lows. The pina and the colada.
~ ~ Ellen DeGeneres

In art and dream may you proceed with abandon. In life may you proceed with balance and stealth.
~ ~ Patti Smith

I want to caution you against the idea that balance has to be a routine that looks the same week in and week out.
~ ~ Kevin Thoman

Evermore in the world is this marvelous balance of beauty and disgust, magnificence and rats.
~ ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

If you are in doubt about what's balanced, look at the natural world
~ ~ F.T. McKinstry

  1. I like Kevin Thoman's comment best because he suggests change is desirable, which I believe. The first picture is a rare but believable kind of balance in nature, the second suggests artifice -- Photoshopping -- amazing but akin to the brief periods of such balance attained by ballerinas en pointe.

    1. June -- I had fun selecting these quotes. They all, in their own particular way, resonated with me. This past year has been one of discontent. My hope is that we will have better times ahead in 2015. thanks -- barbara

  2. Lovely collection of thoughts.
Thirty years ago I gathered a lot of stones from the river, to build a cairn in my garden. They lay in a heap, and became covered in vegetation. We turned them into two garden paths when the children helped build our garden three years ago. Stone paths are their own kind of natural balance.

    1. Joanne -- Oh yes stones represent beauty, strength and endurance. Stone paths are lovely and will last longer than those cheap imitations that can be bought commercially. I have a small collection of various stones that I have picked up along my wanderings in the U..S. I liked your thoughts of gathering stones from the river for a possible cairn. thanks for your kind words -- barbara

    1. Tammy -- Yes, for many, including me some days, a pina colada would do the trick. Balance takes practice similar to stone balancing. Best Wishes back to you -- barbara

  4. My favorite quote (hard to decide) was about the difference between approaching art and life. I think the rocks in balance are amazing, whether done just by nature (top photo) or by man (bottom). Good word.

  5. Always amazed at this ability, but then, look at nature's example. Thanks so much, fun trying to make another video, and hope to be able to make another - reading my poetry. Though shall have to try not to be self-conscious.

  7. That settles it. I have to go downtown and photograph the rock sculptures there. The Japanese are experts at that art form.

  9. What a fun post!! I just love those carins, we have them on mountain trails here on the Maine coast. And then, some people create sculptures in this mode on some rock beaches. The quote most relevant to me was the one by Patti Smith. Will write that down in my new 1015 Journal "creative repository" book. Thank you. Happy new January to you, Barbara!

    1. Rita, Something about the nature of rocks seems to draw folks to them in many creative ways. Balancing rocks is certainly something that I have seen growing in popularity on the landscapes. Balance, not only with rocks, can be found in many ways. It was fun searching for quotes that fit my idea of balance and nice that you had fun with them. -- thanks -- barbara
