HENRY'S TAVERN -- UNUSUAL OUTSIDE DINING

Henry's Tavern has an unusual spot to dine attached to its usual inside dining. Its in an alleyway.

Henry's is located in the Pearl District of Portland, Oregon -- a hipster type of environment.

As you can see in the photos above -- their outside dining is located in an alley with towering buildings surrounding patrons.

How's that for an unusual experience.

  1. I have seen (and tried ...) comparable places - quite fun really, and the guys seems to be enjoying themselves.

    1. visualnorway -- I think your country must be more in tune with providing unique places to eat. This tavern's alley service does seem to be a fun place from the smiles I spotted on the men's faces. The folks in this area of Portland are interesting to watch and maybe someday take some photos of? thanks -- barbara

  2. Whatever works. I think it has ambiance to spare. Reminds me of the conversion of the old Quaker Oats grain towers into a hotel in Akron. Now they're student housing.

    1. Joanne -- Now that is an interesting concept you mentioned -- making the Quaker Oats grain towers into a hotel now student housing. . Sure beats tearing them down. Would be fun to tour them to see how the rooms are laid out. -- thanks -- barbara

    1. Teresa -- they do have a definite allure for many folks. Especially if they are older architectural buildings like those surrounding the Tavern's outside deck. -- thanks --barbara

  4. I'm not a hipster. I think I'd enjoy that table in the alley if I wanted to have a quiet convesation with someone. Otherwise, I like being able to size up my fellow diners so I'd prefer to be inside. The industrial setting doesn't do much for me.

    1. June -- I too know I am not a hipster. It seems that hipsters are a younger generation thing. I am with you also on dining inside. But eating outside the Tavern could be quite delightful if one likes a unique experience. -- thanks -- barbara

  6. Scenic little spot! Presumably for those who can't get through a meal without smoking.

    1. John, You made me laugh when I read your comment. Some folks just seem to like to be different I think, although smoking might have something to do with it too -- thanks -- barbara

  7. I've spent too many years in the foothills and plains - that setting would make me claustrophobic!

This post made me try to come up with the most unusual restaurant/café/pub setting I can remember eating in, and the first thing that came to mind were the open and semi-open air places on the beaches of Costa Rica. (Gave "sandwiches" a whole new meaning, lol!) But really, there is nothing like enjoying a yummy Tico vegan meal and Costa Rican beer to the sounds of the surf and the beautiful sight of the "puesta del sol" (sunset).

Darn, NOW look what you did! Made me want to be somewhere tropical! ;-) But I also can't wait to explore Portland and its environs. What a change it must be from rural Kentucky!

    1. Laloofah -- Now those beaches you describe sound marvelous as I sit here in 39 degree weather. And the food -- Tico vegan meal and a sunset are totally wonderful sounding. No, I sure do think you would be claustrophobic at Henry's. Like John's comment above maybe these folks just need a place to smoke? thanks -- barbara

  10. I think I'll go with an alleyway in Tours France near a University. A table, wine,,colorful umbrella, wonderful food, lots of people to gawk at and good friends to share the ambience with....;)

    1. troutbirder -- You are being very creative with this alleyway dining idea. I imagine the alleyway idea is more prevalent than I suspected. Maybe Florida will surprise you this winter and you'll have a dandy one near where you are staying. Maybe you can even bring Ms Lily since you'll be outside. thanks -- barbara

  11. Barbara, If my daughter gets a transfer to Portland as she is planning and scheming at work to do, we will have to meet up for lunch at Henry's! (Although I will probably be the most un-hipster person there!) LOL!!

    1. Well I am not sure where your daughter lives but many folks that move to Portland love it. I find it an interesting place but I still have a big place in my heart for small towns and country. I imagine she knows that finding a place will be expensive be it apartment or house. Rents have increased as more folks move to Portland -- you might say there is a housing crunch. The folks here are very friendly. So much to do here if that is what one is looking for. Oregon is a beautiful state. -- thanks from this non-hipster -- barbara

  12. This reminds me of the modern art museum in Paris, the Georges Pompidou...which recreates an industrial sort of architecture...I would like one day to visit Portland Oregon and Seattle...You know, in Maine we have our Portland too...

    1. Rita -- What a great event -- to visit the modern art museum in Paris. Did you not live in Portland, ME before you moved to your present place? When I was much younger I took a long van trip through ME and loved it. thanks -- barbara
