FARMER KING'S RAIN GAUGE

Farmer King's Rain Gauge

Farmer King's rain gauge was empty when I took this photo  last fall. Our area had experienced a long summer drought and gardens were looking pretty sad.

This spring we have had a multitude of rain storms along with cool weather. Folks have been complaining about the rain and cold -- how soon they forget last summer. Our soil is drinking in the rain like a thirsty man on a desert. We needed it.

Yesterday was an unusual day. Mother Nature put on quite a performance here. We had  intermittently --  wind, lots of hail, rain, thunder, lightning, and almost a peek of sun in between the roving storms. We have had rain off and on since Saturday and are expecting to have these conditions through this Friday.

Water is high in our creek beds. I could hear its rushing noise as I stood outside late last night -- it was hurrying downstream -- but that rush never seems to last long after a rain. It settles down to higher water than usual but  little flooding in this area.

I look at it this way -- we are receiving a gift from Mother Nature.

    1. Jan -- Yes, we don't have a choice what weather comes our way. I have always wondered how native Americans handled bad weather. Did they have a sixth sense that bad weather was headed their way? Thanks for the nice comment on the photos -- barbara

  2. Exactly. Our story is very similar with snow thrown in a well. It wonderful to see the dried up creeks and ponds filled up not to mention the water table...:)

    1. troutbirder -- Oh, I hear so much about your snow on the weather. You are all brave souls that live in your area. Nice if you are retired and don't need to drive through the snow. But, I know, everyone is anxious for warm weather. Kentucky's hot and humid summer weather is unpleasant for this former Michigander. Fans become my best friends. thanks -- barbara

  3. We do need it. Funny how it seems like all or nothing with the weather. This constant rain in KY has even delayed my bee packages for another week.

    1. Michelle -- I need to learn more about bee keeping. I had a great friend in MI that raised bees who supplied me with lots of honey. I never took the time to watch how he worked with the bees and how he processed his honey. I think it is great that you are into bee keeping. thanks for the comment -- barbara

    1. Rita -- You must be blogging from Quebec? I hope that all is well in that beautiful city and things have not changed drastically since you were there last. Here is the link to the post that I wrote on Farmer King http://folkwaysnotebook.blogspot.com/2012/11/farmer-king-growing-independent-farm.html. thanks -- barbara
