SELLING OFF OLD KENTUCKY PIECES

Old Kentucky handmade crocks

House sale is still moving forward. I've been busy tying up all the ends of attempting to move. It seems I take one step forward and two backwards -- but I do believe all is going forward slowly.

I sold a roomful of antiques that I had picked up here and there in my almost six year stay in Kentucky. I just don't have the space in my not-so-large U-Haul to move only my necessities -- this eliminates my ability to bring along my old country things. An example of some of what I sold are the handmade country crockery pieces in the photo above. But in reality, all this selling off of "stuff" is part of simplifying.

I have more old things to sell and have a buyer waiting for me to decide on my prices. I am selling everything at reasonable prices -- prices one can't refuse.

Looks like I will be landing in Utah in September if all goes well. I have a wonderful canyon cottage waiting for me -- small, old, on flat land, with a stream. Sal and I will certainly enjoy this.

I hope to do follow-up postings ever so often during my moving experience.

  1. I remember well letting go of so many collectibles when I left Minnesota for Santa Fe. Moving across country requires simplifying, it seems, but it's also a nice time of letting go, lightening our load, so to speak. Will you be near Moab? Castle Valley? I'm excited for you!

    1. Teresa -- I guess many of us let go of our collectibles as we move around the country. And yes, it is a good time to let go and lighten our load, both metaphorically and materially. I love Moab (!) however, I will be living in northern Utah -- living in a canyon just north of Salt Lake City, in the Wasatch Range, a part of the Rockies.. I will have the best of both worlds -- on one hand I will have an excellent library system available, fantastic Mormon genealogy (although I am not Mormon) center, major university, lots of organic stores, interesting architecture, a phenomenal farmers market and much more. And on the other hand I will have nature and quietude near my simple house while being fairly close to my daughter and family. I think I will be only about ten miles from Salt Lake City? Thanks for expressing your excitement for me. Each step that I get closer to this happening the more I gain a bit more assurance that this is all going to happen. -- barbara

  2. So sad to say goodbye to those old lovely things that you've been living with, and now will have a new environment. It does sound like a positive move for you at this time. But takes effort...and determination. May your changes be comfortable!

    1. Barbara -- I have found that lovely things can be stored in one's memory through photographs. I am taking photos of the items that were special to me so I can take them with me and look back on them. Not quite the same as the real thing but good enough for me at this stage of my life. You are a nomad so you know the prep work it takes to move on. thanks for your nice comment -- barbara

  3. I am somewhat new in reading your blog. Love it when people are off on moving adventures that change their lives. This should be both challenging and fun! Things are only of value because of the memories that link us to them. Let us others pretend they are worth so much more.

    1. Tabor -- this is a day by day effort -- moving cross country that is. Every little thing that signals I am moving in a positive direction tells me that I am on the right trail. I am familiar with western living and know there is lots of material for posts and photography. Good to hear from you -- barbara

  4. yes, it will happen. and a year from now you will feel entirely settled and probably be slightly into another collection or two. It sounds like a good place, near enough to the happening things and quiet enough for peaceful thoughts. A big change but a well thought out one.

    1. June -- Like your positive reinforcement. I am going to try and stay away from collections if possible. My new abode will be a cottage/cabin in a natural setting -- which I feel very lucky about finding. I am renting it from a friend of my SLC daughter. Thanks for your support on this major move -- barbara

  5. Letting go of stuff here as well girls. I will have less but it's still too much. My move should be fairly straight easy as the person I bought from is leaving behind much nicer stuff than I have and the people who are getting this place want what I'm leaving behind. But still. Life will be good in the mountains above Salt Lake. Snow in your future. I'm excited as you must be. I've gone through almost everything and know I have enough room without it being cluttered - - - - - - I think. I went into town today and now know a route that will be used that will give one pretty impressive 360 view. Ya I'm ready. Not quite a done deal yet but close.

    1. One Fly -- I know what you mean when you say, "less but it's still too much." I feel I still have so much to sell/give away. The closing date has been changed so I will be leaving in Sept. Glad of that as the weather will hopefully be cooler. And . . . I will have time to continue minimizing my belongings. That sounds like a good trade with the pieces. I take it that you are going to be living in the place that you pictured on one of your posts. I will be living out of town as you will be also. Short "to town" trips that offer beauty are desirable, I think. Like you I am excited but the done deal has not been completed.
      Thanks -- barbara

  8. Moving can be a cleansing, but not always an easy one.

Your new home sounds very nice and quite different from where you are now, Barbara.

The crocks are very lovely...so earthy looking, which I love~

    1. Jan -- Like your paintings on your blog. Couldn't find a comment place so I thought I would mention this here. Nature is important to so many folks -- we surely need to keep wild places for the wild things. It should be important to all of us but . . . then there is that thing about corporate profits. thanks -- barbara

  9. Sounds like you are moving to a place that will meet your needs. I hope you can take some of your treasures along with you, though. It's nice to simplify, but you don't want to oversimplify!

    1. Dianne -- Now they are pretty much all gone. Travelling semi-light if that is possible. Long trip -- with my dog Sal it should be interesting. I am sure he will want to drive part of the way. Can't wait to get there and settle. thanks for the kind words -- barbara

  12. Ah, this answers the question I asked you in my reply to your comment on my blog! I know the deal isn't done till the papers are signed and the cash is in hand, but congratulations anyway! Exciting times await - all those new adventures and places to explore and research, the change of scenery and climate, the incredible western skies, the photo ops - I'm almost jealous, and I already live in the Rockies and in a new home, no less! :-)

Your canyon cottage sounds wonderful, can't wait to see photos! Best of luck with the house sale, your load-lightening (bet all of us wish we lived close enough to make a play on some of your treasures!), and your move! Exciting times indeed.

I know how busy times like these can be, but if you get a few minutes and the spirit moves you, I just published a post yesterday that I think you'll enjoy. Lots of vernacular turn-of-the-last century architecture (in Butte, MT!)

    1. Laloofah -- this is a very busy time for me. Keeping positive thoughts that this sale will go through. Appraiser goes through Monday and closing is set for end of Aug. If all happens like I hope I should be in Utah in Sept sometime. Driving with a 95 pound dog will be the most difficult part of my trip -- he does not like to ride in trucks or cars and bulks terrible at getting in -- think I need a cattle prodder (kidding). thanks for stopping -- barbara

    1. Vicki -- As of today the date I will be leaving will be around the end of Aug. That is if everything goes as it should. I will more than likely take some photos along the way -- will put them on (if they turn out that is) when I am settled in Utah. My computer will be packed in the bowels of my U-Haul so that means no developing or editing. thanks for the safe travels comment -- barbara

  15. Moving is the perfect way to get rid of all the things that have been piling up. We have been living in the same house for 28 years and ought to do the same thing. Good luck!

  16. A canyon cottage, how truly romantic & historic!! Simplifying & making a journey: it does shake one's life up, but it is rewarding! New life chapters!

    1. Rita -- Although I haven't seen the cottage I am assured by family in Utah that I will be overjoyed by its character. My daughter thinks it is from probably the 1930's or 40's. She tells me the exterior doors are actually carved either commercially or by the builder. I feel fortunate that my daughter was able to find this place for me in a semi- country setting. Now I just have to get there! It will be a new chapter! thanks ~~ barbara
